The Boonie hat became popular among U.S. soldiers during the Vietnam war for its superior protection in hot, humid environments. It shields the head from the sun, rain, and wind, plus it provides a level of camouflage. The shape is similar to a bucket hat but has a wide, stiff brim and fabric tape with loops around the crown for branches or other forms of vegetation. Boonies also commonly have grommets, mesh paneling, or screen vents around the crown for ventilation. Today, this hat is still widely used by military professionals as well as outdoor enthusiasts and comes in a variety of colors/camouflage patterns to match military uniforms.
